2023 Art League of Daytona Beach's “Figuratively Speaking” Exhibit, Judges Comments:
Second Place: Yoyai Kusama, Acrylic by Robert Shirk
"This painting displays an excellent use of a traditional subject, portraiture, that was handled in a very contemporary direction. The various layers, repetition and use of spheres and squares is brilliant." - Judge: Jonathan Knight

The Story Of This Painting.

This Neo-Pointillist painting is on 2 sheets of 18"x24" plexiglass on top of 2 sheets of 24"x32" plexiglass. Approximately 24,000 dots! You can learn more about my journey to Pointillism here.

Dots, dots, and more dots!

Long before I started using dots in my paintings, Yayoi Kusama was using dots in her art. According to Wikipedia, she has been acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan, the world's top-selling female artist, and the world's most successful living artist.

She moved to New York City in 1958 and was a part of the New York avant-garde pop-art scene throughout the 1960s. Her work influenced many artists during that time including Andy Warhol.

Her dot infatuation started when she organized a series of "happenings" in the late 60s. Naked participants were painted with brightly coloured polka dots.
